As the developer of this extension, I can tell you first-hand that although it may seem easy on the outside, hooking into the GMail engine using external JavaScript was a big pain.

It requires parsing through the site's own obfucsated JavaScript code for a particular method signature, and then overriding it.

Take a look at the source code if you'd like to see what I'm talking about:

    Gmailtalkemoticons.user.js

Granted, it would be markedly easier for Google to do this themselves, since they have access to the pre-compiled JS source. Hoever, I think this would violate the philosophical purity of the GMail/Google Talk interface.

On the otherhand, like prefer the pretty emots - hence the extension. Enjoy!

    hi jimbojw
thanx for commenting on my blog . Ofcourse i said the statement
    > Its not a big task programming wise to implent such a feature
for gtalk people only . As you too said that it would have been much easier for gtalk people as they have access to all the scripts .It is ofcourse quite difficult to make script for a application whose code is hidden from you . You must have taken pain to find the codes , gtalk people used and then making a script , checking if it conflicts other scripts .. woof .. thinking all this stuff is a pain itself .
Anywayz thanx a lot for this wonderful script , keep up the good work .
